Improving Safety, Patient Experience, and Equity through Shared Decision-making Huddles

  • The I’M SPEAKING study supports hospital teams in learning how to actively listen to patients during labor, recognize and honor each individual’s needs and preferences, and engage in shared decision-making.

What is TeamBirth?

TeamBirth is a nationally recognized approach that promotes effective communication, collaboration, and clinical care during childbirth. Designed to strengthen the connection between the care team and the birthing person, TeamBirth was developed by Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health system innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

Results

Both patients and providers reported positive experiences with TeamBirth.

According to their responses to the Mothers Autonomy in Decision Making scale (MADM), a survey given to see if they felt involved and in control if their care, postpartum patients in Oklahoma who participated in TeamBirth huddles during labor reported feeling more involved in their decision making and that their choices were respected compared to patients who did not have TeamBirth huddles.
