Babies Antibiotic Stewardship Improvement Collaborative (BASIC)

Working with hospital-based teams, the Illinois Perinatal Quality Initiative (ILPQC) in 2020 launched a statewide neonatal initiative to implement American Academy of Pediatrics and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

ILPQC in 2018 deployed a statewide initiative to increase use of ACOG guidelines and support hospital-based teams to develop the capacity and resources to offer IPLARC

Improving Postpartum Access to Care (IPAC)

The Improving Postpartum Access to Care (IPAC) Initiative was launched with 14 hospital teams in May 2019 to help increase use of this new standard of offering and scheduling universal early postpartum visits for a maternal health safety check within two weeks postpartum, in addition to the traditional six-week visit.

Golden Hour

This initiative focuses on resuscitation and stabilization practices for newborns—especially Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW) infants—to reduce complications and ensure better transitions to NICU care.

Severe Maternal Hypertension

Initiative goals were achieved in October 2017 and hypertension teams transitioned to sustainability in January 2018.

Birth Certificate Accuracy

The Birth Certificate Initiative aimed to achieve at least 95% consistency between birth certificate data and the medical record. This goal was met for 14 out of 17 key variables through a combination of medical record/birth certificate audits and collaborative learning focused on best practices.

Reducing Early Elective Deliveries (EED)

Early Elective Delivery (EED) is associated with adverse infant outcomes and has no known benefit to the mother.

Neonatal Nutrition

The Neonatal Nutrition Initiative aimed to improve the nutritional status of premature infants through standardized, evidence-based feeding protocols.

Antenatal Corticosteroids (ACT)

12 participating Illinois hospitals received a variety of resources to support their improvment efforts, including a data collection portal, ACT toolkit, grand rounds and monthly training webinars, all provided at no cost to participating hospitals.
