Severe Maternal Hypertension

Initiative goals were achieved in October 2017 and hypertension teams transitioned to sustainability in January 2018.

Overview

Working to reduce severe maternal morbidity in women with severe range hypertension

Launched in January 2016, the Severe Maternal Hypertension Initiative aimed to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality associated with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy—one of the leading causes of preventable maternal harm.

Over 100 hospital teams across Illinois participated in this quality improvement initiative.

Initiative Goals
  • Improve outcomes for patients with severe-range hypertension
  • Support early recognition and timely treatment
  • Promote postpartum safety through education and follow-up
  • Foster continuous improvement through case debriefs
Objectives
  1. Reduce severe maternal morbidities (preeclampsia, eclampsia, and superimposed preeclampsia) by 20%
  2. Ensure 80% of patients with severe hypertension receive treatment within 60 minutes
  3. Ensure 80% of patients receive appropriate discharge education and a follow-up appointment within 7–10 days post-discharge
  4. Conduct a debrief in ≥50% of severe maternal hypertension cases
